Bible studies of all kinds are a cornerstone of many Christians. Whether you’re walking through a book of the Bible, reflecting on a devotional, or going deeper into Sunday’s sermon, the right study can help you connect with God in meaningful ways.

And while there are plenty of ways to study the Bible on your own, there’s something special about learning alongside other believers.

However, group Bible studies aren’t ideal for everyone or every situation. Many people find it difficult to open up in larger groups, and it can be challenging for everyone to have a chance to share during a bigger discussion. On top of that, larger group Bible studies don’t always have the capacity to address the nuances of each person’s unique situation and needs.

This is exactly why I’m excited to have two special guests joining me for this episode’s conversation.

Debby Gossett and Eileen De Sando are here to tell us about what’s known as a One-On-One Bible Study. The personalization, sense of safety, and trust built through this type of study have been invaluable to Debby and Eileen as they’ve grown in both their faith and their individual life journeys.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • What a One-On-One Bible Study looks like
  • The benefits of this form of study
  • What it takes to lead an effective One-On-One Study
  • And more!

My Key Takeaways:

1) Group Bible studies may not be ideal for everyone or every season of life. Most churches offer a variety of Bible study groups, but whether they’re organized by gender (such as women’s or men’s groups) or life circumstances (new parents, empty nesters, singles, etc.), there’s no guarantee that simply fitting into the “box” of a particular group means the study will be the right fit for you. The quality of these larger groups greatly depends on the facilitator and the other participants. Many people crave a more focused, one-on-one setting where you can go deep with your questions and have more control over the topic of the study.

2) One-On-One Studies are highly personalized. One of the greatest benefits of a One-On-One Study is the ability to get to know the details of your study partner’s life intimately. They know your background and what you were concerned with the week before; they’re not just starting from scratch. This deep understanding of you and your circumstances means they can go before the Lord in prayer for you specifically—and they can offer guidance and wisdom that is personalized to you.

3) Successfully leading a One-On-One Study requires a few key characteristics. A great candidate to lead a One-On-One Study must be firmly grounded in Scripture. They must also be able to keep information confidential and withhold judgment so that there is safety in the study. Most importantly, they need to have a heart for the person in the study. If they have a heart to help women heal and strengthen their faith, then they are an amazing candidate to lead a One-On-One Bible Study with another woman. About Debby and Eileen:

Debby Gossett and Eileen De Sando participate in a One-On-One Bible Study together. Eileen created this type of study as a way to invest in women and help them go deeper into God’s Word. Eileen serves the Women’s Individual Study at Revolution Church, where her husband, Larry, is an Associate Pastor. Debby participated in our Marriage 2.0 Intensive in 2024 with her husband, Gary. Shortly afterward, she connected with Eileen and has greatly benefited from the intimacy that comes from a One-On-One Bible Study.
