Mark and I have been navigating a pretty big life change lately. It’s required us to be intentional about “talk time.” With kids interrupting, the phone ringing, and everyday responsibilities calling, this has been no small task.
We have our usual routines of communication, but we’ve needed more intentional time during this season.
What have you found to work for you when you need extra time to talk? Making an appointment with each other? Going to a coffee shop? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Summer time is an easy one. We will generally go for a walk and talk without any interuption. In the winter time we will go and have dessert somewhere and talk. Whatever you do, you will probably need to leave the house to avoid child and phone interuptions.
I definitely agree. You have to pull away from the distractions of life! Good insight!
You're going to think I'm stalking you- following your websites! 😉
Today we are actually leaving for our annual "Marriage Maintanence weekend"- where we get away kid-free to review lasts years goals, set some new ones, re-evaluate our family's mission and how we're doing with that- oh my…lots of stuff. (And it's not all work and no play either 😉
Then our bi-weekly date nites thru-out the year are attempts to upkeep our plans. We've really enjoyed these two ways that work for us in being proactive- however the nitty gritty, day to day talk time probably trumps it all. We tuck our kids in, turn off the TV and recap our day together several times a week.
I love the idea of a "marriage maintenance weekend!" Thank you for sharing!
Um, you guys talking so much that you don't have time to post the last couple months? ;>)
Communication is the best tool to defuse anger and prevent arguments. … the two of you still need time together as a couple to keep that relationship strong.
