Last week upon returning from our cruise, I found myself in Chicago with my two youngest boys and a connecting flight that wouldn’t leave until the next morning. When I called my friend Amy to see if she would pick us up at the bus stop if we decided to take a bus home instead of staying overnight, we ended up having a conversation about her just making the two hour drive up to Chicago to get us. I hated to ask her to do that–it would be an inconvenience to her to take four hours of her time to come get us.
Amy’s response was, “Jill, that’s what friends are for.”
Such a simple little statement, but it’s been ringing in my ears for the past week.
That IS what friends are for. We give of our time for one another. We go out of our way for each other. I would have certainly made the trip for Amy if she would have asked.
My guess is that most of us have more trouble receiving than giving. But a true friendship is built upon both. It’s something worth thinking about. So how are you at asking for help or accepting help from a friend?
I am very bad at asking for help with anything – but I loved hearing about your friend & hope I would be that kind of friend as well!
And all the time in the car was totally worth it because of all the catching up we got to do on the way back! I hate O’Hare, but I loved the time to connect!
Very true, Jill.
I got to meet you quickly in Scotsdale, AZ at a mini hearts at home meeting over 5 years ago and have been a huge fan of Hearts at Home ever since.
Jan 15, 2007, when I heard the words I thought I would never have to hear in my life…Your husband has stage 4 colon cancer…..my jaw dropped and wanted to run and hide in a hole. I was afraid to let any of my friends know what was happening in my life. I was ashamed for what ever weird reason. But Thank the Lord for my moms group….They came and took care of me via food for the family, gift cards to walmart to buy diapers and food. And just being there with open arms for hugs and shoulders to cry on. I am so glad I do know woman of the Faith that would come and help me out in my time of need. For I know G-d would call me to do the same for them. I like to hear others say “What are friends for”. Those 4 words mean so much to me now than before Brent got sick.
Can’t wait for another mini trip to AZ from Heart at Home. (hint hint) hehehe
G-ds Blessings,
Katrina of Mesa, AZ
