As a coach, one of the things I do most often is help people learn how to manage their emotions in a healthy way. The human capacity to feel is God-given. However, when our feelings go unchecked, that’s when emotional ups and downs can start to steal our peace, sabotage our relationships, and fill our minds with self-defeating thoughts.

So how can we manage our emotions instead of letting them manage us? Alicia Michelle is here to show us the way. Alicia is a coach, author, speaker, course creator, and podcast host. She blends science and faith together to provide us with a helpful process for working through difficult feelings with compassion and clarity.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • The three-step process to managing emotions
  • Why it’s important to ground our feelings in God’s clarity
  • How we get to decide where we camp out in our feelings
  • And more!

My hope is that the strategies in this conversation will help you develop a healthier, more positive relationship with your feelings.

My Key Takeaways:

1) Start with acknowledging your emotions. All emotions are God-given. He created our emotions to let us know what areas in our lives require attention. Start by noticing what you are feeling and complete this prompt: “It makes sense that I would feel (sad/upset/angry/depressed/etc…) because __.”

2) Utilize discernment. This is how we can call out what is true and not true. Remember that, just because we feel something, it doesn’t mean our thoughts are rooted in reality. When we’re faced with a sticky situation, it’s important to own our part and consider how we may be contributing to the mess. This way, we can check our emotions instead of letting them lead the way. Our emotions, while valid, were never intended to act as our GPS.

3) We have the power of the Holy Spirit to help us manage our emotions. When we feel overwhelmed or like our emotions are taking over, we need to go to Jesus. He has given us the power through the Holy Spirit to determine what we need to let go of, what is important to bring up with our partner, and how we need to own up for our actions. We don’t have to allow our emotions to run the show. If this feels difficult or hard to navigate, consider reaching out to a coach, counselor, or therapist who can teach you how to understand your emotions better.
