My Key Takeaways:

1) A faith investment always yields returns. In addition to fitness, one of the things we talked about in this conversation was the faith investment in James’ life when he was young. Although his life hit some bumps in the road, that early foundation of faith eventually bore fruit and transformed his life. The Bible tells us to “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). If you have a child who is making some life choices you don’t agree with, I want you to take encouragement from this verse. Their story isn’t finished yet!

2) Health is not an extracurricular activity to our faith. We tend to fall into the trap of thinking about spiritual disciplines as only including things like devotions, prayer, and Scripture memorization. However, taking care of our bodies is a key part of our faith! Our faith and fitness should therefore be intertwined.

3) Fitness is a partnership with God to care for your body. Not everyone is going to be a bodybuilder or have six-pack abs, but everyone should seek to care for their bodies. In order to have a healthy soul we need to have a healthy body. You can start with something small like going on daily walks. Before you do that though, the very first step is to start with prayer. Ask God to join with you in caring for every part of you—not just your soul but your body too!
