After 20 years of youth ministry, my son-in-law recently completed a much-needed, four-month sabbatical. It’s encouraging to see that, more and more, both employees and their employers are valuing the soul-satisfying, replenishing healing that comes with taking a break from your normal routine.
God invites us to a weekly Sabbath, a one-day rest. My guest today agrees that Sabbath is important—and she says that soup is one simple way that busy women can make a weekly sabbatical a practical possibility.

My Key Takeaways:
1) Sabbath interrupts our rhythms. Life can be so busy that sometimes, we don’t even have the time to realize that we are burnt out and exhausted. God created the Sabbath to interrupt our regular rhythms. It’s a time to set down our worries, our hurries, and our checklists. This time of rest is meant to help us stay more connected to God and each other, allowing us to extend more grace throughout our week.
2) We shouldn’t feel guilty for taking a rest. In a productivity-driven world and even in Christian circles, it’s easy to feel guilty for taking a whole day off to rest. However, it’s important to realize that it’s good to stop producing. We are not robots who can work 24/7 without sleep or food or basic necessities. We are human beings that God created to rest and recharge. Taking a regular rest is an act of dependence on God.
3) No checkmarks, only choices. A good day of rest should still have choices, but no checkmarks or to-do lists. This is why soup makes such a good Sabbath meal! It can be prepared in advance and even be made in larger quantities for impromptu sharing. What checkmarks do you need to ditch to enjoy a restful Sabbath?
