What role does prayer play in your marriage? For us, prayer has been a profoundly positive force in our lives—both as individuals and as a couple. When it comes to strengthening your marriage, there are many tools and strategies to explore, but prayer is one you simply can’t overlook. It’s a powerful way to invite God into your relationship and deepen your connection with one another.

This is an extra special episode for us, because we have two new books on prayer coming out this week: 199 Prayers for My Wife and 199 Prayers for My Husband.

This is a passion project we’ve had in the works for a while, and we’re so thrilled to finally share it with you! These books are a daily guide for lifting your spouse in prayer, and they will be released on January 29th.

In this episode, you’ll learn about:

  • A practical definition of prayer
  • How God uses prayer to help both you and your spouse grow
  • Why prayer can transform your marriage
  • And much more!

We are covering all things prayer in this conversation and we are so excited to share these new resources with you.

Resources mentioned in this episode:

My Key Takeaways:

1) Prayer is simply talking with God. You don’t have to use flowery, religious vocabulary to communicate with God. When we talk to God, we may feel pressure to “clean up our act” or avoid appearing ungrateful and needy. However, we shouldn’t let these concerns hold us back—prayer is an honest conversation in which we can express our thoughts to God, not a speech that needs to be perfectly scripted and delivered.

2) Prayer is the best way to uplift your marriage. This practice works better than nagging or pointing out all the ways we think our spouse needs to improve themselves. When we’re advising couples, we always recommend that each partner should pray before bringing things up with their spouse. Prayer provides an opportunity for God to reveal things in our own hearts that may need attention before we approach a difficult conversation with our spouse.

3) Give your spouse to God. When we pray for our spouse, it’s important to allow God to work—and this means fully releasing control to Him. It can feel tempting to pray for God to convict your spouse and “show them the error of their ways,” but as humans, we can never be aware of all the ways that God is already at work. Let’s practice giving our spouse to God and allowing Him to work in their lives however is needed.
