A dad is foundational in every person’s life, but not everyone has a solid, stable father figure to rely on.

When Mark and I work with couples and individuals in our coaching sessions, we are often able to trace a person’s current challenges back to father wounds. So many people are still being negatively affected by the difficult relationship they had with their father growing up—many of them without even realizing it.

As we help these people unpack the past, we can’t undo their experiences. But we can point to our Heavenly Father and remind them that there is incredible healing to be found in the unfailing, unconditional love that only God can provide.

My guest today sees the effect of father wounds in her everyday ministry work. Rachelle Starr is the founder of Scarlet Hope and Freedom Signa, a ministry that reaches and disciples exploited women. She’s the author of the book Outrageous Obedience, and is passionate about reaching women with hope wherever they are.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • How God used a home-cooked meal to start an entire ministry
  • Why it’s so important to understand that true healing takes time and patience
  • How the love of the Heavenly Father can heal wounds we receive from our earthly father
  • And more!

I appreciated Rachelle’s story of how God led her to show up in the lives of these precious women, and the healing that has come to so many as a result.

My Key Takeaways:

1) Waiting on God doesn’t mean you do nothing. When we’re seeking God’s direction, we may sense that God has a purpose, but He often requires us to wait—we don’t get the full plan all at once! We can move toward God’s plan one small action at a time. As we keep our eyes open to what’s around us, He will show us what steps to take. Often we find the answers to our big questions as we choose small acts of faithful obedience along the way. When we ask to see people through Jesus’ eyes, God will use our obedience in small things to prepare us for larger tasks.

2) Father wounds take time to heal. They are not always easy to recognize. It takes time to build trust with someone enough to allow the roots of their story to emerge. The process requires patience, grace, and trust. We may be tempted to focus on changing the behavior or fixing the situation, but it’s important to remember that true healing begins deep down. With time, the surface behaviors will change. God’s mercy can heal the wounds that earthly fathers create.

3) Showing love begins with simply entering a person’s world. Something as simple as sharing a home-cooked meal with no strings attached is a powerful gesture of care that can speak volumes. When we want to help someone heal, the most important thing to do is meet them where they are at with patience and a willingness to allow God to work. Simple acts of kindness go a long way to build the trust that will enable you to be part of someone’s healing journey.
