One of the things we say time and time again is that the “perfection infection” happens when we compare our insides to other people’s outsides. When we do this, we often come up with inaccurate conclusions about ourselves AND others.
Falling into the trap of the perfection infection is especially easy when you’re on social media. Not only are your favorite influencers putting the best parts of their lives on public display, but all your friends and family are often doing the same. It’s natural to want to highlight happy moments, but constantly scrolling through everyone’s best bits can sometimes make you feel like you’re not measuring up.
This is one of the reasons why we share so honestly and openly about the real stuff in our lives…even when that stuff is ugly, hard, or imperfect.
Our guests in this episode can certainly relate to this sentiment. Rebecca St. James and her husband, Cubbie Fink, illuminate the heartaches and triumphs that have shaped their story as a married couple, as parents, as musicians, and—most of all—as Jesus followers in their first co-authored book, Lasting Ever.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- How authenticity shows both the highs and the lows of life
- Where to find security in who we are
- What to do when you are going through a dark season
- And so much more…
We so enjoyed having Rebecca and Cubbie share their story and we hope it helps to take some of the perfection infection’s weight off your shoulders today.

My Key Takeaways:
1) Differences in marriage help us grow. Do your spouse’s quirks annoy you, cause friction, or make you wonder why anyone would do something that way? If so, you’re not alone, but we encourage you to look at them with a fresh set of eyes. While the differences that distinguish us from our spouse may seem like a liability, it’s those same differences that cause us to grow and see things from a new perspective.
2) The source of our contentment is Jesus. It’s so easy to fall victim to the perfection infection and start comparing ourselves to what we see on social media. However, the truth is that we will never be content if we are always looking to the next thing for happiness. We have to find joy and contentment in our current circumstances through Christ. He is the source of contentment in the midst of any circumstances.
3) Your “winter season” will end. Rebecca and Cubbie share a bit about their own “winter season” where things were the hardest. One piece of encouragement they gave is that these hard seasons do pass! God has many more blessings for us on the other side of these difficult seasons of life. While it’s true that there are some things that will only be resolved in heaven, God is still there with us to hold us in our hurting and get us through challenging times.
