We cannot heal what we don’t admit is broken. Yet too many of us pretend, perform, and try to appear perfect which keeps us striving instead of thriving.

That’s a journey that I used to be on myself! I often say that my books are a result of my mistakes and personal growth. That’s why so many of them (and even this podcast!) have “No More Perfect” in the title. Authenticity is freeing and I have come to experience that freedom and so has my guest today.

Justin Davis is the author of a new book titled Being Real > Being Perfect. He’s an author, speaker, and pastor. Justin has dedicated his life to helping people experience life change through the power of authenticity. Along with his wife, Trisha, he founded RefineUs Ministries where he shares his personal story with honesty and transparency. They live in our hometown of Indianapolis, IN.

In this conversation, you’ll hear:

  • How to stop turning to our performance to see our worth
  • Why we create “false selves”
  • The first step to embracing your authentic self
  • And so much more!

This is a very personal topic that I’ve had to tackle in my own life and I hope it helps you in yours!

Resources mentioned in this episode:

My Key Takeaways:

1) Transparency leads to transformation. It seems that especially in Christian circles, we have a tendency to put on a mask and try harder to be perfect rather than be honest about our struggles. We choose to perform rather than be real. When we embrace transparency, it brings about healing to our hearts so that we can be our true selves.

2) God can handle our emotions. He wants us to be honest with Him! That means expressing our emotions, our doubts, and our fears. We can see from Scripture that the people who were the most humble, honest, and vulnerable with Him were the ones who experienced the most life change. Going to God with our emotions helps deepen our trust and relationship with Him.

3) Start by examining yourself. It’s important to take the time to Identify the areas in your life you wear masks, compartmentalize who you truly are, or where you feel shame. These are the areas to pay attention to and work to let go of pretending so that you can enjoy a freeing, authentic relationship with Jesus and others.
