Did you know we homeschooled several our children for a while? Whether or not you’ve done the same, every parent serves as a teacher to their children in one way or another—in fact, we do it every single day! We may not always consider the lessons we’re passing on to our kids, but there are so many benefits to discipling a child’s heart with intentionality and purpose.
I can think of no one better to help guide a conversation on this crucial topic than Leslie Nunnery.
Leslie is a Christian author, speaker, and homeschooling advocate. She and her husband David founded Teach Them Diligently, a ministry that provides resources and experiences to strengthen Christian homeschooling families. Leslie has written several books on parenting and homeschooling, including Teach Them Diligently: Raising Children of Promise and Heart School: How Amazing Parents Become Excellent Home Educators.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- What it means to “heart school” children
- Why it’s important to live out your faith
- How heart schooling can come from anyone to anyone

My Key Takeaways:
1) Anyone can “heart school”. This isn’t just for parents. Anyone can help children strengthen their faith by intentionally applying biblical principles to the way you engage with them. This can be done whether you are a grandparent, teacher, neighbor, aunt, uncle, or whatever role you have in a child’s life. Practicing heart school means finding opportunities to instill faith into the everyday parts of life.
2) You can’t impart something you don’t have yourself. Before you can practice heart school, you have to be growing in Christ yourself. Your children will be far more likely to resonate with biblical principles if they see you living out what you are teaching. Do they see you open God’s Word on a daily basis? When you are stressed, do they hear you talking it out to the Lord in prayer? When you respond negatively to your children, are you quick to offer an apology? These are the things that will speak volumes to your children without you uttering a single word.
3) Heart schooling isn’t just for kids. If you are an empty nester or want to mentor others, you can use these principles to invest in those around you. Start by asking the question, who has God placed in my sphere of influence? It could be your neighbor, someone from your church, or someone who is in a different life stage from you. There are opportunities all around us to engage with others and use heart school principles to uplift their lives.
