There’s nothing better than a story of hope! When we hear of someone who has overcome struggles, it puts things in perspective and inspires us to persevere in the midst of our own challenges.

My guest in this episode has risen above truly desperate circumstances. Peter Mutabazi survived on the streets of Uganda for five years before one man saw potential in him and changed Peter’s life. Today, Peter is a single dad to countless foster children and his three adopted children, Anthony, Ryder, and Skyler. He is the founder of Now I Am Known, an organization that supplies resources to support vulnerable children.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Peter’s experience living on the streets of Uganda
  • How the kindness of a stranger changed Peter’s life
  • What Peter has learned on his foster care journey
  • And so much more!

I hope you find this conversation as inspiring as I did!

My Key Takeaways:

1) When children grow up in poverty and abuse, they have no motivation to dream of the future. In Peter’s village in Uganda, 60 out of 100 children would die before the age of 2. Those who survive look around, and based on what they see, they don’t have a reason to believe their future can improve. When people treat these suffering kids with kindness and dignity, it begins to give them a reason to dream.

2) There is power when we see people as individuals. Meeting basic needs like shoes, food, and shelter provides dignity and worth, which is the start of a child gaining hope. When Peter’s foster dad wrote Peter’s name on the chair to give him a place at the table, it changed his belief about belonging to a family. The man’s faith in Jesus gave Peter a new idea of what love means.

3) Foster parents need a supportive community. In the lonely and exhausting role of foster parenting, there are many simple ways others can provide assistance. Offering to mow the lawn, checking in to see what groceries are needed, or providing a listening ear can give weary foster parents what they need to keep going.
